Electronically Commutated Motors are a relatively new product segment for the motor industry. Essentially these motors replace fractional HP (horsepower) or very small HP applications. These motors would most commonly be found in refrigeration equipment and HVAC equipment and fulfill air circulation demands. The ECM motor incorporates a very small electronic drive controller and a DC motor. Combined these devices can deliver over 60% energy savings over the older technology. This technology is widely used in new equipment, however has limited exposure on a national level as a retrofit.
